What does the CL stand for on memory chips? CL stands for CAS Latency. When a module is labeled CL2 it means there are only two clock cycles before the module can send the first block of data. CL3 means there are three cycles before the first block of data is sent. Cl2 is considered to be a small percentage faster than CL3 modules. PC100 and PC133 modules are manufactured as both CL2 and CL3. You will need to check with your system''s requirements to see which option is compatible with your system. Does it matter which slots I plug my new module in? In general, you will get the best performance if you put the largest module (in megabytes) in the lowest-numbered slot. For example, if your computer comes with 32MB of removable memory and you want to add 128MB, it would be best to put the 128MB module into slot 0 and the 32MB module into slot 1. My system will not boot after installing your memory? Are you getting an error message on the monitor? If it states a Non-System Disk error occurred, check to make sure that you do not have a non-bootable disk in the floppy drive, or even the CD-ROM drive if your system can boot to the CD drive.

HOW IT WORKS Before information can be processed by a computer, it must first be transferred to a special data storage area called RAM (Random Access Memory). RAM is connected directly to the processor by high speed data pathways. As long as your data is in RAM, the computer''s processor has almost instantaneous access to it. When the processor needs information that is not currently in RAM, it must be loaded from the hard drive and placed in RAM, a much slower process. So the more RAM you have, the higher your system''s overall performance.
Along with the progression of RAM size, chip technology has changed to the point where it’s become fairly difficult to know what type of RAM your system needs. The irony is that it’s actually more difficult and time-consuming to become familiar with RAM than it is to install it, which should take less than 10 minutes. A RAM Discovery. There are three ways to discover how much RAM is in your PC. Look under the Total column for the amount of RAM your system has. The amount is listed in kilobytes (KB); to convert it to megabytes, just eliminate the numbers after the comma. For example, if the amount is 16,192KB, remove the 192. You have 16MB of RAM. Another way to find your memory is to watch your monitor as the computer boots up. The Basic Input/Output System (BIOS), which controls your system’s start-up routines, runs a diagnostic test on the computer’s peripheral hardware. In the process, it tells you how much memory you have.
